You couldn't be more right in your observations. I would add that, at least in my conference the payment of apportionments in the number one value. It's talked more about than anything else. It seems to me that if we put more people in the pews via confession of faith and thought them to be good stewards of all God had given the apportionment issue would be resolved.

I appreciated your comments about the Superintendency. I have to say that I have never received a call wondering about the lack of complaints. Then again, I can't recall the last a DS ever bothered to call at all. In fact, the only time my DS ever intitiates contact is is to arrange the annual Charge Conference, and my thoughts on appointment matters.

Some years ago, I served as a supervising elder to a local pastor who had discovered that the pastor preceeding her had branded the Lord's Prayer as a prayer Christians ought not to pray. She was horrified to discover that her DS disavowed any knowledge of this pastor's unique philosophy. "How could he not know?" she asked.

How could he know?

In over 25 years of ministry I can count on one hand the number of times a Superintendent has chosen to visit on Sunday during worship. One never visited my parish to worship, even when invited!

I have had one DS say he never bothered to read the church newsletters sent to his office.

I'm not saying that a DS needs to micromanage. I do wonder if it's time to for a superintendency more connected to its pastors and churches.
